A woman has been caught on CCTV pulling up to a rubbish bin before throwing in a plastic bag believed to have contained seven newborn puppies.
The unidentified female can be seen driving a Jeep behind a mechanical workshop in Coachella, US, before looking inside a dumpster and then throwing a plastic bag in another large bin filled with rubbish.
The Riverside County Department of Animal Services (RCDAS) in California has released the footage of the distressing incident in a bid to find the woman after the dogs were found by a passer-by next to the bin.
Officials believe the dogs wouldn’t have been able to survive much longer due to the day’s high temperature.
Police were called to the scene who took the puppies to the RCDAS’ team of vets.
All of the pups were believed to be three days old and are understood to be terrier mixes.
“The Good Samaritan played a major role in saving theses puppies’ lives,” RCDAS Commander Chris Mayer said.
“His actions were humane and heroic.”
He said the woman’s actions are despicable and he and his colleagues are already communicating with Riverside County Sheriff’s investigators and the District Attorney’s office in building a strong cruelty case.
“There is no excuse for dumping puppies,” Mayer said.
“Especially in today’s age when we or other shelters would be willing to get these animals to foster parents or rescue partners. This was a shameful act.”
Just last month, a dozen puppies were abandoned in a crate in South Australia.
