'My windows started rattling': Earthquake shakes residents in Western Australia

A 5.6-magnitude earthquake has struck in Western Australia’s south.

The earthquake happened at 12.56pm (local time) on Sunday at Walpole, according to Geoscience Australia.

But a resident in the southern Perth suburb of Canning Vale, 410km north of Walpole, said they felt the earthquake.

“My chair moved and heard a rumble,” the woman said.

Mike Borowiec had been sitting up in bed at his home in the Perth suburb of Lesmurdie when the earthquake struck.

He told Yahoo 7 it “shook enough that I fell over”.

“It felt like somebody grabbed the side of the bed and was giving it a good shake,” Mr Borowiec recalled, adding it only lasted about five seconds.

Another man in Perth said he had an “old house” and his “windows started rattling as they always do when construction work is going on up the road”.

“But today is Sunday, so it must have been the earthquake.”

Another person, who lives in Harrisdale, said her “bed was shaking and the ceiling light was moving from side to side”.

Following the earthquake, the Bureau of Meteorology said there was no tsunami threat.
