Wild weather leads to road closures and long delays across Australia's southeast

The wild weather that savaged the south east coast of Australia this weekend has meant various road closures are now in place in NSW and Victoria.

Although snow might delight some, several roads have been closed due to snowfall, with some delays expected to be up to five hours long.

Victoria and NSW have experienced hazardous weather since late last week, however the weather is expected to clear up by Monday.

Road Closures in NSW central tablelands

While Sydney has already seen the worst of the strong winds, several roads in NSW’s central tablelands have been closed due to snow.

Multiple roads in the central tablelands are now closed, motorists are unable to pass and can expect closures to be in place for up to five hours, authorities said.

“Snow continues to fall, graders are operating however as quick as they are moving it new dumps are replacing it,” NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Control Command said on Sunday morning, about 8am.

All roads in the Oberon Local Government area are closed, including O’Connell Road due to ice and snow. Duckmaloi Road has since been opened as of about midday.

“Council crews are working to clear roads, currently at O’Connell Rd, Duckmaloi Road and Abercrombie Road,” Oberon Council said on Facebook.

Jenolan Caves Road is also closed in both directions between Great Western Highway and Jenolan Caves, the official advice is to avoid the area, and exercise caution.

Great Western Highway from Raglan to Marrangaroo also remains closed, however Traffic and Highway Control Command report that snow and ice clearing operations are now underway.

“Roads closures implemented at nearest centre to enable access to food, water and shelter,” Police said in a Facebook post, warning people of the closures.

Cold temperatures and showers are expected throughout the day in the region.

Teams in 4WD’s were patrolling the Great Western Highways with emergency supplies and first aid and refuge stations have been set up along the highway.

A severe weather warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for people in the Northern Tablelands, Mid North Coast and parts of the Northern Rivers and Hunter districts.

Damaging winds up to 90km/h can be expected, with the worst of it from late morning, to mid afternoon.

The Illawarra suburb of Bellambi recorded winds up to 106km/h.

‘Treacherous’ conditions in alpine regions

While some Victorians may have been delighted with the early morning snowfall, conditions are “treacherous” in the alpine regions.

Thick snow was spotted at Daylesford, Hepburn, Woodend, Creswick, the Dandenong Ranges and Mt Macedon on Sunday morning.

"There have been snowfalls at fairly low levels, which is a little more unusual," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Steward said on Sunday.

Areas as low as 400m had gotten snow dumps overnight and into Sunday morning.

“Heavy snow falls and freezing temperatures have resulted in road closures and treacherous driving conditions in our Alpine areas,” Vic Roads says on the website.

Monash Freeway, which was closed in the early hours of Sunday morning due to black ice, is open again, according to Vic Roads.

However, Great Alpine Road between Harrietville and Hotham village is currently closed due to heavy snow and the danger of trees falling.

Popular alpine resort Mount Baw Baw has been shut off, with the closures on Mount Baw Baw Tourist Road and South Face Road.

Dangerous black ice has also been detected on parts of the Calder Freeway and Macedon-Woodend Road.

VicRoads warns drivers in those areas to drive with “extreme care”.
