'His skin was peeling off': Father left with severe burns after falling into garage fire

A Perth father has been badly burnt when he tried to put a fire out in his home.

The man, who is in Fiona Stanley Hospital, has extensive burns to most of his legs, arms, hands and head after a fire broke out in his garage around 7.30pm on Monday night.

Seven News understands the man, his wife and their two children had only recently moved into the home in Iluka.

It's believed something ignited in the garage and the fire spread to boxes used for moving.

The man, who was tying to kick the burning boxes out of the garage to avoid his house catching on fire, then tripped over and fell into the flames.

"He came out and we saw the skin was peeling off him," neighbour Margot Ludik said.

“One of the ladies, I don’t know her, she got a bucket of water and started cooling him down with that.”

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage and the man remains in hospital.
