Israeli Soldiers Fire Tear Gas in Bethlehem Amid Angry Protests Over US Jerusalem Declaration

Protests quickly turned to clashes across the West Bank on November 7, as Palestinians responded to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The step signals a significant concession to Israel and has been widely condemned by international leaders, igniting protests from Turkey to Tunisia. Israel’s sovereignty over Jerusalem since its annexation in 1967 was not until now recognized internationally with countries keeping their embassies in Tel Aviv.

Hamas called on Palestinians to stage a new intifada – meaning uprising – against Israel, while Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas called Jerusalem the “eternal capital of the State of Palestine” and said the US was no longer fit to mediate peace negotiations in the region.
