Smoke and Ash From Volcano Soar Into Sky

Smoke and ash spewed from Guatemala’s Volcan de Fuego (“Volcano of Fire”) during a strong eruption on Tuesday, July 11.

The volcano became active on Monday, spewing columns of smoke that reached nearly 20,000 feet, according to the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology of Guatemala. Volcanic ash spread west-northwest, falling onto nearby communities, such as San Pedro Yepocapa and Alotenango.

This is the volcano’s sixth eruption this year, Prensa Libre reported. Credit: Twitter/chitay_w via Storyful
