More than 100 hoon cars destroyed in Vic each month

Over 100 cars are being crushed in Victoria each month, with most belonging to hoon and drink drivers.

According to police figures, Just over 2200 cars were destroyed in an 18 month period up until January.

About 150 belong to hoon drivers who evade police and another 150 belonged to drink drivers, with majority of the crushed cars being Holden Commodores, The Herald Sun reported.

Although police have described the spike as "alarming," Acting Superintendent John Fitzpatrick said the destroying of the cars will continue.

"We are absolutely committed to the cause," he said.

"All those whose cars had been crushed had already committed at least a second offence."

The destruction of impounded vehicles has been allowed since 2010.

Most of the vehicles are crushed by recyclers in Laverton North.
