Young dad cornered by three luxury cars during terrifying attempted carjacking
A gang of thugs driving luxury vehicles is targeting motorists in cheap cars in Melbourne's north.
In the latest violent incident, a young father was cornered during a terrifying attempted carjacking.
The modest Commodore targeted in the attack is 30 years old and worth only a few thousand dollars, but a gang driving a fleet of cars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars wanted to steal it.
Around midnight on Wednesday night, the driver who owns it was cornered by a recent model Mercedes Benz and two top-end Holdens in a Rosanna back street.
"I thought it was police trying to pull me over because they were flashing lights," the young father said.
After pulling over, the victim soon found himself surrounded by a parked car and the three vehicles driven by the would-be carjackers.
While he was blinded by the headlights of the Mercedes, one of the crooks smashed the driver's window with a hammer before the terrified victim managed to find a gap between the vehicle and drove away.
"Really lucky I got away," he said.
"While I was trying to get in between two cars, you know, having glass smashed all over my face. It's pretty full on."
The 23-year-old was then pursued by the three cars for 10 minutes.
The appeal of this very basic car, which is without a radio, to crooks driving luxury vehicles is not immediately obvious.
A police taskforce will investigate if the attempted carjacking is linked to other car crimes in Melbourne's north.
It's the second time in a matter of months that the victim has managed to escape a violent carjacking attempt.
"They're a danger to everyone, you know, they're going to go around just smashing people's windows in for no reason," the victim said.
