Woman airlifted to hospital following snake bite

A woman has been airlifted to hospital after she was bitten by a snake in Victoria.

The woman, in her 50s, had to be airlifted from Lerderberg State Park, near Blackwood, northwest of Melbourne, on Sunday afternoon.

She was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition after she was bitten on the leg.

The air ambulance was used because the parkland is not accessible by road.

In August, Department of Land, Water and Planning Senior scientist Nick Clemann told the ABC snakes had already begun coming out of hibernation.

He warned to be observant and to avoid accidentally stepping on them.

"We start to get some of the weather ... cues that we're coming in to spring, so snakes begin to emerge from the areas where they have sheltered over winter," he said.
