Woman injured after laptop explodes from 'overheated battery'

A woman has been injured after her laptop exploded due to an overheated battery, sparking a fire at her Melbourne east home.

Shocking photos show the remnants of the base of the small black computer scattered all over the floor of the Canterbury house on Monday.

The laptop is believed to have been fitted with a battery that overheated while it was connected to a charger.

The woman, aged in her 20s, managed to put the spotfires out and was treated for minor burns at the scene.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade said the incident should serve as a warning.

"We don't recommend that any appliance be left on continuous charge," Fire Investigator Damian O'Toole told 7 News.

"That includes iPhones, iPads and any laptop computers."
