Driven to drink: Man loses licence after drink-driving a motorised Esky

An apprentice carpenter has lost his licence after he was caught riding a motorised Esky while drunk in Melbourne's east.

Josh Griffiths, 20, was pulled over and fined by police while riding the esky in Mooroolbark about 11pm on Saturday.

“I was just riding’ it," he told 7 News. "I wasn’t being stupid."

Griffiths, from Kilsyth, had a blood alcohol reading of 0.041 after being breath-tested.

His probationary licence was cancelled for three months and he was fined $389 for drink-driving and $777 for using an unregistered vehicle.

Mr Griffiths told 7 News fears he may now lose his job over the incident.

“I don’t know if I can keep my job,” he said.

“I need to get myself to and from work. I drive the cars during the day to pick up timbers.”

Griffiths said his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and because of the loss of his licence, he is unable to drive his parents to their holiday destination over Christmas.

"I am letting her down,” he said.

“I wouldn’t have done it if I knew I was getting into trouble for it.”

Leading Senior Constable Adam Dickenson said: "To have this young man riding around poorly lit streets whilst alcohol affected, with no vehicle lights and not wearing any protective equipment, it's simply a recipe for disaster."
