Callous owner left puppy to starve
A Melbourne animal shelter has been left shocked after coming across one of the worst cases of neglect they have ever seen.
Davey, a four-month-old puppy, was starving, skeletal and suffering from a broken leg when he was eventually discovered.
Marisa Debattista, founder of Second Chance Animal Rescue, said: "Davey is definitely one of the worst we've seen."
The pup is now safe in the hands of the animal welfare organisation, but vets initially feared he would not survive.
"Due to his malnourishment, his bones are quite brittle and potentially he was kicked to the leg. It looks like a blow to the leg has caused the break," added Ms Debattista.
Now Davey is on the road to recovery and has a huge appetite.
Staff have to feed him small amounts, nine times a day.
"It's terrible to see the condition he's in at the moment, but at the end of the day, we're not going to be sad for him, we're really happy he's with us," said Ms Debattista.
They've named him 'Davey' after the Foo Fighters front man and rock God, Dave Grohl, who broke his leg in a catastrophic stage fall last month, but incredibly continued to perform.
Davey needs surgery to fix the break in his leg, but the operation is expected to cost between $2,000 and $4,000.
The shelter needs donations and says he's worth every cent.
