'Vegan only' rental home slammed as 'discrimination' against meat-eaters
A Gumtree listing advertising a home for rent in Melbourne’s south east has caused controversy after a landlord specified that only vegan tenants would be considered.
The advertisement, which has since been removed from the classifieds website, listed a “4 bedroom house for rent to a vegan family in Frankston”.
Aside from the property being a spacious home for rent close to the beach and amenities, the description stated: "House is only for vegan family and no other food or beverages allowed in the house.”
Struggling new mum Janice is hunting for a new rental as her current landlord is selling up.
“Why should I be discriminated against just because I like pork roast?” the 25-year-old told A Current Affair.
Other locals also agreed.
Vegan psychologist Claire Mann told A Current Affair the landlord had every right to decide what type of family lived in their home.
"Veganism is a philosophy which underpins everything in a person's life," she said.
"If I allow people in an area I have control over to come into my home and give me earnings from ... the suffering of animals, I don't want any part of it."
Under Australia’s anti-discrimination legislation, the advertisement could technically be illegal, as the veganism requirement falls under “political opinion” in the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986.
