Two dead after boat capsizes off Brisbane

Two men have died after their boat capsized in waters off Moreton Bay near Brisbane.

Emergency services including a rescue helicopter were sent to the scene just after 1pm on Wednesday, with police divers seen entering the water searching for other people who may have been on board.

Acting Inspector Dave Candale from Queensland Police said it’s believed only two men were invovled.

"At this point in time we have emergency services still deployed in the area conducting a search, but at this stage it's only going to be the two males involved in the incident," he told media.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene while another man was flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition where he later died.

The two men were believed to be fishing at the time in a small boat, they have yet to be identified.

QLD Police confirmed a passing boat, the South Passage, raised the alarm after spotting the overturned vessel.

“They immediately stopped and rendered assistance to one of the men and pulled that person from the water.

"As you can imagine, certainly witnessing an event like this would be distressing for any person and I would imagine it would be a similar situation for those persons on that boat,” Inspector Candale told media.

It’s believed strong winds may have played a factor in the incident, however police are still investigating.

Authorities are unable to confirm how many people were on board when the boat capsized near Green Island between Manly on the mainland and North Stradbroke Island.
