Tragic accident leaves little girl, 11, fighting for her life

A little girl is fighting for her life after falling from the family van in Sydney’s Upper North Shore.

Kate Waterworth, 11, and a friend were excited about going to the school fete when she decided to take a ride on the family van in Berowra.

But Kate fell after 200 metres and hit her head. She is now fighting for her life.

Parramatta Police Inspector Jane Hansford said Kate sustained head injuries.

She had been visiting a friend and the pair were excited about going to a nearby fete.

But unknown to her mum, Kate had clung to the back of the family van as she drove off.

“She was airlifted to Westmead Children’s Hospital where she’s presently undergoing treatment,” Insp Hansford said.

The street was a crime scene for several hours with crash investigators preserving evidence on top of the van before the vehicle was towed away.

Kate is in a critical but stable condition in hospital with her family at her bedside.
