Tourist records the moment he falls to his death in freak accident

A tourist having the time of his life on a zip line has inadvertently recorded his final moments alive before the line collapsed, sending him plummeting to the ground.

Sergio Murilo Lima de Santana, 39, filmed his own death while on holiday in the popular tourist resort of Canoa Quebrada in north-eastern Brazil on October 10.

His partner also recorded the moment when a pole supporting the zip line collapsed and Sergio landed with a thud on the sand beneath him.

Sergio – from Belem in northern Brazil – was taken to a nearby emergency care unit but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities in Aracati banned all zip lines in the municipality the next day.

A statement by the prefecture said all such mechanisms would be rigorously inspected prior to their reopening.

The last time the zip line in question had been inspected was in March, by the Fire Department.

Civil Police in Aracati will investigate the case.

Sergio and his partner had been on holiday in Ceara for six days prior to the accident.

A video posted to social media showed he had been in the state capital, Fortaleza, days earlier.

He had apparently travelled to other destinations, such as Portugal and France, in the past.

A friend wrote online: "Another friend has left us. A disaster. May God welcome you with open arms."
