Toddler mauled to death after crawling close to pet dog's bowl

A toddler has died after she was mauled to death by the family dog.

A’myrikal Jolynn Hull, 1, from the US state of Illinois, died after her family said she got too close to the dog’s food bowl and was bitten on the head on Thursday (local time), WICS reports.

Cory Painter, who is a grandmother to one of the little girl’s siblings, told the news station “the dog has never snapped before” and it was “like her best friend”.

Ms Painter told Herald & Review “the dog would eat snacks out of the baby's hand”.

“The fact that she didn't make it crushed my soul,” she told WICS.

Ms Painter described the dog as a pitbull-Patterdale terrier cross.

The dog has been seized by animal control but its fate is not yet known.

“A’myrikal was a precious one-year-old full of life and just celebrated her first birthday and was all smiles,” according to a GoFundMe page.

The toddler’s death remains under investigation but no charges have been laid at this stage.
