Salvation Army soldier on child sex charges

A 71-year-old Salvation Army soldier has been charged with child offences dating back more than 50 years.

The offences allegedly involved boys aged between 11 and 18 during the years 1963 to 1989.

Midland detectives charged the Thornlie man after an extensive investigation.

The offences allegedly occurred in Subiaco, Gosnells, Maddington, Beckenham and South Perth when the man was with the Salvation Army and associated with several churches.

A Salvation Army soldier is not employed by the army but is eligible to wear the uniform.

Police said the man was a band member and assisted in organising trips and events.

In the 1980s the man allegedly rented flat in South Perth where he encouraged boys to engage in sexual behaviour with him.

The man has been charged with four counts of indecent acts; three counts of indecent dealing with a boy under 14 years; two counts of indecent assault and one count of aggravated indecent assault.

He is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court today.

Police are urging anyone with any information relating to any incidents during 1963 and 1989 to contact them.
