Two injured on moored ship
A 55-year-old Portuguese man has lost his leg after being involved in a crushing incident on a ship moored at a Port Hedland wharf on Monday.
Port Hedland Seafarers Association chaplain Alan Mower said the man also suffered compound fractures to his other leg and had a broken pelvis.
A Filipino man onboard the Happy Buccaneer ship is understood to have compound fractures in one leg.
The incident is being investigated by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
An AMSA spokesman said the crew members were moving equipment on the ship when their legs became trapped.
The accident is the latest in a number of onboard incidents at Port Hedland over the past 12 months.
Last year an engine fire at an ore carrier moored at a BHP Billiton berth resulted in injuries to several crewmen. In a separate accident an Indian seaman lost a leg after becoming tangled in ropes attached to a tugboat.
Mr Mower said both men involved in Monday’s accident had been flown to Perth earlier this week by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
