Flood rescuers among bravery commended

The flood waters had been rising in the East Kimberley community of Warmun for hours and most people evacuated when Christopher Churchill saw a woman clutching a metal fence pole with one hand and a dog in the other.

Mr Churchill and local policeman Sen. Const. Donald Couper had spent the day assisting in multiple rescues of people trapped by the floodwaters.

Only when Mr Churchill found a child's inflatable swimming pool were they able to help the woman and her dog clamber aboard and paddle to safety.

For their actions on March 13, 2011, Mr Churchill and Sen.Const. Couper were awarded a Commendation for Brave Conduct in this year's Australian Bravery Awards.

Other community members who helped were recognised by the award of the group bravery citation: Kathleen and Rodney Burnby, the late Christopher Clare, Tanya Couper, Cecil Mosquito, Julie Echo and Leon Pinday.
