Guildford Grammar in lockdown

Guildford Grammar School was forced into lockdown this afternoon after a burglary suspect was seen being chased by police officers on school grounds.

Headmaster Stephen Webber said a staff member saw police in pursuit of the person through a car park on the school's perimeter about midday today.

The school was subsequently put in lockdown for 20 minutes, in which time officers managed to apprehend the wanted man.

As per school procedure students were then evacuated and a roll call took place before the children were allowed to return to normal class schedules.

Mr Webber said when the man was sighted, it was in an area far from students.

He said parents were sent a text message and email to inform them that the school was safe after the incident.

A police spokesman said reports that the suspect was armed with a firearm or other weapon were incorrect.
