A pilot sustained head injuries when he crashed his plane in a paddock in the south-west this afternoon.

The Beech Stagger Wing crashed about 1.45pm near Ferguson Road in Dardanup, 13km south-east of Bunbury.

A witness told thewest.com.au he saw the plane smoking and spluttering overhead as he was driving towards Ferguson.

He arrived at the crash site and helped pull the pilot from the plane, who he said was covered in blood and appeared to have an ankle injury.

The pilot was the only person in the plane.

He was taken to Bunbury Hospital with potentially serious injuries.
