A 31-year-old man allegedly led police on a short pursuit through Cottesloe while driving a stolen car last night.

Officers in a police helicopter allegedly spotted a stolen Holden Commodore being driven at high speed on West Coast Highway in Scarborough last night.

It will be alleged the driver ran red lights and did burnouts at several intersections.

A police spokeswoman said officers tried to stop the man near the Curtin Avenue and Marine Parade intersection in Cottesloe.

"After a short pursuit the Commodore was abandoned and the driver and passenger ran from the vehicle," she said.

The driver of the car was allegedly caught hiding in scrub a short time later.

The Commodore was stolen from a home in Hillarys on Saturday.

A 31-year-old Padbury man will be summonsed for stealing a motor vehicle.

Inquiries are continuing.
