Western Jewel wins Perth Cup

Top apprentice Kyra Yuill became the first female jockey to win the Perth Cup when she delivered owners Bob and Sandra Peters their fourth win in the Group 2 feature on Western Jewel.

Sitting third last approaching the turn, last year's champion apprentice Yuill guided Western Jewel ($9-$7) around the big field en route to a two length win.

God Has Spoken ran a game race under the 57kg top weight when second and Senhor Da Gama was third.

Race favourite Kincaple was under the whip before the turn and failed to run on.

Western Jewel won last year's ATA Handicap before running a slashing fourth to Guest Wing in the Perth Cup.

She again won the ATA, run last Saturday, and avenged for her unlucky effort in last year's cup.

Yuill stuck with Western Jewel over Moonlight Bay after winning the St Leger on the latter in the lead up to the cup.

"It's amazing. I never thought this would happen," Yuill said.

"It was still up in the air but I was always leaning towards her.

"She's tough and doesn't mind backing up like last year."

The win changed the fortunes of the Peters family who had no luck in the feature races during the Ascot summer carnival.

Ranger was bowled out of the Railway Stakes as favourite and was also third in the CB Cox Stakes as favourite.

"We haven't had a lot of luck," Bob Peters said.

"Today made up for it.

"It goes back to last year when I thought she was unlucky in the Cup.

"She's done a good job for us.

"I couldn't pick between her and Tranquility in this. Tranquility ran fourth which wasn't too bad.

"She's a good, hard horse and proved it today."
