Owner-breeder Kim Loxton will be eyeing a potential stud career for Boom Time if the colt wins the $400,000 Group 2 Schweppes WATC Derby (2400m) at Ascot on April 11.

A classic win would enhance Boom Time’s chances of becoming a stallion prospect given he has arguably Australia’s best pedigree — the family that produced world champion sprinter Black Caviar — coursing through his veins.

The first yearlings of Black Caviar’s half-brother All Too Hard will be offered at next year’s sales. Expectations are high that the four-times Group 1 winner, who stands at Vinery Stud for a service fee of $66,000, will make a splash.

Boom Time’s three-quarter brother Magnus (Flying Spur-Scandinavia) stands for $16,500 at Eliza Park in Victoria.

Loxton paid $22,000 for Boom Time’s dam Bit Of A Ride after she won a Wyong maiden in 2002.

She won another six races under the care of Ascot trainer Neville Parnham, but her success at stud has not been as instant.

“When I bought Bit Of A Ride, Black Caviar wasn’t born,” Loxton said. “Because of her pedigree Coolmore Stud and I had an agreement where we shared foals.

“She was to go to the best stallions and the foals were to be auctioned.

“Her first foal was a dwarf, she had a foal who was blind in an eye, twins, others who had shocking legs. She got a horse called Qui Est La, who had a couple of wins in Singapore.

“Coolmore dropped out so I took her to Arrowfield, where she was covered by Flying Spur and we got Boom Time.

“I brought her back to WA and she has since had a foal by my sire Pitleco at Caulfield Park.”

Boom Time rocketed into derby calculations when he broke his maiden status in Saturday’s Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) despite being caught three-deep for most of the race.

The colt indicated he was approaching a suitable distance range when he was a solid third behind Battle Hero a fortnight earlier in the JC Roberts Stakes (1800m).

Boom Time’s Melvista win saw the TAB slash his derby price to $6, trailing only WA Oaks winner Delicacy ($2.50).
