Unwanted filly set to reward Daly

A lack of interest in Star Of Husson at the Perth yearling sale two years ago could prove a blessing in disguise for owners Adam Levine and George Daly.

Passed in without a bid at the Magic Millions auction, Star Of Husson will prove her doubters wrong if successful in today's $100,000 Belmont Classic (2200m).

"We didn't get one bid," Daly said. "I trained the mother and had a terrific opinion of her, so I bought into her."

Patience and initiative have led Devine, Daly and Star Of Husson to the verge of a feature win in the Belmont Classic.

The first foal of Ascot winner Star Of Danetime, Star Of Husson started her career under the guidance of Daly, but proved a handful. She flashed her potential with two seconds at Belmont Park, including a fast-finishing performance behind Spin Da Wheels 12 months ago.

With her bad habits outweighing her potential, Daly suggested a change of environment.

"The last thing she wanted to do was concentrate on galloping," Daly said. "Adam suggested Grant Williams and I think he's done a great job with her.

The change of environment suited. She shows above-average ability."

Since the transfer to Williams, Star Of Husson has won twice at Bunbury and once at Belmont.

The Husson filly ran ninth to Tick Tick Bloom in the Belmont Guineas (1600m) before getting within a head of the same horse when second in the Belmont Oaks (2000m).

Star Of Husson's last-start performance and Tick Tick Bloom's absence catapulted Star Of Husson to Belmont Classic favouritism.

"Her last run was very good," Daly said.

"William Pike jumps back on and he keeps her mind on the job.

"She's a dead-set stayer and I think she'll go close."

Star Of Husson has eased from $2.10 to $2.25 with the TAB.

Dayana Plate winner Proceedwithcaution has been the big firmer.

"It's all about Proceedwithcaution at the moment," the TAB's Ben Pomatti said.

"He's $3.40 into $2.85 and we took one bet of $6000 at the top price. The favourite has been largely left alone."

Ben Kennedy will ride Proceedwithcaution, who jumps from barrier seven. Star Of Husson has drawn barrier eight.

Daly, who has enjoyed a recent run of success with Trade Down, starts Mireille in the Happy 85th John Martino Handicap (1200m).

"I like her chances, but she's one of about six chances."
