Deanmill crush depleted Imperials

The Deanmill Hawks’ emphatic victory over Imperials on Sunday has propelled them into a second semi-final berth after they gained sufficient percentage to climb the ladder for a double shot at the 2014 premiership.

The 29.16 (190) to 5.3 (33) win again illustrated the division between the top sides and lowly ranked teams of the competition as the Magpies were condemned to finish the season winless.

As has been the case for the year, the Magpies show signs of competiveness in the early stages of a contest, however as their key players tire, opposition sides have gone on a goal spree.

This was again evident at Deanmill Oval as the Hawks overcame a scrappy first half to run riot with 18 second-half goals.

The Hawks generally marshalled the midfield clashes where Joshua Reeve, who returned from injury, looked sharp as he and Craig Stanley-Smith, Riley East, and Brock Prunster were responsible for many productive forward moves.

As the game progressed the Hawks’ forward structure was showered with ball supply to which they duly responded for scoreboard presence as David Fall slotted six majors, while Brandt Pears and David Markotis were at their menacing best with five goals apiece.

The Magpies simply did not have the player resources to compete albeit Wayne Barden, Ryan Pessotto, Kim Guthrie, and Keenan Wilson were solid contributors.

With the game in safe keeping at the main break the Hawks’ objective was to lift the winning margin to gain a percentage boost, a task they completed with success as they fired through 10 goals in the third term and another eight in the final stanza.

Their defence was superb all day as Daniel Sarinis and Daniel Tamm worked together well while Matt Tamm, Reeve, Connor De Campo and Stanley-Smith continued their influence to blanket any Magpie challenge.
