A boy has been charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly punched the police dog that had bitten his brother.

The boys, both aged 17, were allegedly trespassing at the Dalyellup Primary School on the weekend when the incident happened.

Bunbury police officer-in-charge Sgt Peter Jenal said the boys allegedly ran when they were discovered by police and then refused to stop.

Police dog Geoffrey was released and bit one of the boys in the leg.

His brother then allegedly punched the dog in the ribs.

One of the boys was taken to Bunbury Hospital for surgery to treat puncture wounds.

Both boys were charged by police with trespass.

They will appear in the Bunbury Children’s Court at a later date.
