Festival chief calls for more volunteers

Work is under way for next year’s Festival of Busselton, with a new president among the changes for the event.

Busselton’s Jenny Stewart was elected president at a recent annual general meeting of the committee and has stepped into the role with a wealth of knowledge about the festival spanning more than 10 years.

“The atmosphere the festival brings, it’s a great thing for summer,” she said.

Mrs Stewart was first involved in the event in 2004 when her daughter Leia was crowned as the festival queen.

Since then she has been a committee member, a queen co-ordinator and a festival judge and she is now looking for more people to also get involved.

“I’m trying to expand the committee so we’ve got a much larger base,” she said.

“We really need more people.”

The month-long event which runs in January each year, and has been running for more than 50 years, will return in 2016 with all of the usual events.

Mrs Stewart’s election as president follows events last year which saw the committee without a president four months out from the event.
