Boardriders put Classic on agenda

Margaret River Boardriders Club new president Paul Thompson is eager to get started.

The Margaret River Boardriders Club has elected Paul Thompson as its new president, amid plans to get the club back into shape to host the Margaret River Classic this year.

The club held its annual general meeting last week and formed a new six-person committee to organise surfing events.

Mr Thompson's father Lindsay and older brother Neil are both former club presidents.

The new president said he was excited to "get the club moving in the right direction".

"It's early days, but the Classic is definitely back on the agenda," he said.

Boardriders secretary Bill Gibson said the AGM was a big success. "Everything's back on track," he said.

Mr Gibson said the departure of the club's former president had been difficult.

"It kind of fell in a little bit of a hole," he said.

Mr Gibson said he tried to "introduce a bit of order" at the club in forming the new committee.

"It's been a labour of love," he said, "but it's all worked out."

Mr Gibson said the Australia Day Single Fin competition was a great success and the club had more events planned.

He said the junior boardriders had also "gone from strength to strength".

Mr Thompson said there would be a club round held on March 7.

Registration forms are available from Beach Life Surf Shop.
