Rising star has big ambitions

Jazmyne Roberts, 16, hopes to represent Australia one day.

Busselton cricketer Jazmyne Roberts has been busy in the past year travelling locally and interstate to play the sport she loves.

For the 16-year-old Cape Naturaliste College student, who has been selected as a monthly Busselton Freight Rising Sports Star, it means a fair chunk of time is spent away from school training, playing and travelling.

But it hasn't stopped the determined player-student, who has just started Year 11 and believes education is just as important as sport.

"I do my homework in the car on the way to and from training," she said.

"I think it's better to have a mixture of education and cricket."

"When my Mum came in and said 'I've got something to tell you', I thought I was in trouble.

"Then when she said 'you've got December's Rising Sports Star award', I was like, 'yes'."

Jazmyne first started playing country week cricket in 2008 and since then she has represented WA twice as part of the under-15s playing group, and in January played with the WA under-18s team in Ballarat.

Now playing with a girls' league in Rockingham, Mandurah and surrounds, Jazmyne is also involved with the South West Academy of Sport and is working to develop her skills as a spin bowler.

"I did three or four country weeks before I started playing local cricket in Dunsborough with Yobs," she said.

"I stopped playing with them … to play with a girls' league."

Though the team Jazmyne was part of in Ballarat came sixth in the competition, Jazmyne was ranked as the 18th overall bowler from 75 players.

"There was definitely some good competition there, but overall it was just a good experience," she said.

When asked what the future held, Jazmyne said she would like to be a part of the Western Fury development squad and one day represent Australia.

She said she would keep believing and achieving to make it happen.
