First WA case of Hep A from berries

First WA case of Hep A from berries

More than a dozen Australians are now believed to be sick with hepatitis from contaminated berries, including the first case in WA.

Dr Gary Dowse from the WA Health Department confirmed this morning on ABC radio that the first WA patient had been reported.

He said it was unlikely to be the only case here.

Last night the official numbers of infections from the imported frozen berries was 10 -- two from New South Wales, three from Victoria and five from Queensland.

But Dr Dowse said that by this morning the number appeared to have increased to 12 or 13, excluding the WA case.

He said anyone who had consumed the affected Nanna's frozen mixed berries and developed symptoms such as nausea or generally 'feeling crook' should see their GP.

People without symptoms should not be concerned.

Contacts of the first WA case had been notified to be on the watch for symptoms.

It comes as evidence is mounting that the contamination is linked to the raspberries in the mixed berry packs.
