Surfer dies at Smiths Beach

Surfers at a South West beach tried desperately to revive a man who was pulled unconscious out of the water yesterday.

Police said the surfers pulled the man from Smiths Beach about 11.50am and performed CPR as they waited for an ambulance.

A St John Ambulance crew arrived a short time later and provided assistance on the beach before transporting the man to Busselton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The 33-year-old surfer was injured in a surfing accident when he was rendered unconscious, police said.

It is understood police will prepare a report for the coroner.
