A GROUP of motorcyclists are hoping to make the road a safer place starting with a group ride this Sunday.

Up to 100 riders are expected to take part in the Bunbury Ulysses' Motorcycle Awareness Ride to Harvey Dam.

The ride was organised following a spate of fatal motorcycle crashes last year.

Bunbury Ulysses branch president Greg Baker said a fee riders paid to go on the ride would go towards subsidising an advanced motorcycle training course.

"It's open to anyone with a motorbike and an appropriate motorbike licence," Mr Baker said.

"The main reason for the ride is to raise awareness of motorcyclists and to get people to do the right thing.

"It's about getting people to be aware of other road users and get people to show respect."

Ulysses Bunbury fundraising coordinator Barry "Grub" Kelson said many of the people killed recently while riding motorcycles were experienced riders.

"Everyone needs to take a breath and think about what they're doing," he said.

South West Police have thrown their support behind the ride with some officers planning to take part.

South West Traffic officer-in-charge Sgt Craig Clarke said he was pleased to see the riding group getting behind initiatives and training programs to make riders safer.

The ride costs $20 per bike, pillion passengers travel for free, and the cost includes a sausage sizzle and drink at Harvey Dam.

Riders should gather at McDonalds at Bunbury Forum at 9am this Sunday for a 9.30am departure.
