Small paintings a big boost for ECU artists

Art enthusiasts are invited to kick start the careers of budding South West artists while also lending a hand to a Bunbury charity at Edith Cowan University’s 9 by 5 Auction next week.

Proceeds from the auction go towards funding professional catalogues for graduating ECU South West visual arts students which act as a reference as they begin their search for work.

A portion of the profits are also donated to Art Partners, a mentorship program that allows people living with a disability to take part in mainstream art activities.

ECU arts technician Mike Bandurski said the auction had its roots in an 1889 Impressionist Exhibition held in Melbourne which displayed 183 works painted on 9 by 5 cigar-box panels.

“Anybody can contribute a work but all of the profits go towards helping out artists who are just starting out — in this case our students,” he said.

“Up for auction we’ll have works from students, alumni, staff and established South West artists including Helen Siever.”

Second year visual arts student Kiri Wicks said the 9 by 5 Auction was a welcome opportunity to express creativity in an environment free from expectations.

The 9 by 5 Auction begins at 1pm on September 20 at ECU’s Building 6.

Works will be on display at Building 1 in the week leading up to the event and silent bids can be made for those not attending.
