Bennett takes council top job

Dardanup Shire Council elected a new president last week after the recent death of shire president John Gardiner.

Deputy shire president Mick Bennett has been elected as the shire president – he has already served two terms from 1995 to 2005 and 2009 to 2011.

“I would like to thank the councillors for their support, ” Cr Bennett said.

“I have decided to take on the role until October when our next elections are held and I’ll review my position at that time.”

Mr Gardiner died on February 2 after a three-year battle with cancer. He was involved in the Shire of Dardanup and Ferguson Valley for more than 30 years.

Cr Bennett said Mr Gardiner had made a great contribution to the region.

“We will miss Cr Gardiner and his passion for the shire and particularly the Ferguson Valley, ” he said.

“John always supported development and encouraged new opportunities for economic growth.

“We will continue on with that passion and deal with challenges ahead of us.”

The council elected Cr Peter Robinson as the new deputy shire president.
