Rocker chick hopes she'll be support pick

Baldivis beauty Mia Joy is hoping to fly the flag for rock chicks, entering her band The Joy Evelation in the upcoming She Who Rocks competition.

The contest will see the winning two WA, female-fronted bands open for The Baby Animals and The Superjesus at the Charles Hotel on Friday, May 22.

Joy said warming up the crowd for her idols would be a dream come true.

"I'd be incredibly proud," she said.

"I would be carrying the torch for the local community and all female musicians.

"Sometimes girls can do it tough in a male-dominated industry - I'd love to lead the way."

Joy said she hoped her honesty, charisma and powerhouse vocals could get her through the contest.

"The main reason I entered was it was a great way to promote rock women all around Australia," she said.

"This is a national competition and it's a great thing for women in the industry - especially rock."

Joy, who has been performing for more than 25 years, found success with The Joy Evelation several years ago and has since performed all over the globe, including iconic American venue The Whisky A Go Go.

The four-piece band has released two EPs and will follow up its 2014 album with a new release in October.

"One of the songs we've just finished recording has a lot of flamenco-style guitar," she said.

"We've really worked on the instrumentation a lot on this album."

The Joy Evelation will head back to LA later this year and Joy said she hoped a London and European tour would follow.

The winner of the She Who Rocks competition will be determined by an online voting poll which closes on May 1.
