Police are appealing for information following the theft earlier this week of a five-tonne front end loader from a contractor working on Roy Hill's port construction site.

The Caterpillar 988H, valued at $1.2 million, was stolen from a BGC Contracting site south of Port Hedland between March 22 and March 24.

East Pilbara Detectives officer-in-charge Tony Langer said the thieves would have needed a truck to transport the oversized loader.

"We are looking into CCTV and appealing for witnesses," he said.

"(Transporting a loader) is not something you would think was unusual up here but people may have found it a bit strange if someone was transporting it at night."

The 4.5m2 loader requires a special permit to be transported on public roads.

It can be identified by the number 263 on its side or serial (chassis) number BXY04704.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
