Young riders line up at new starting gate

The first eight riders take off from the Hedland BMX club's new gate.

Hedland BMX held its annual Have a Try Day earlier this month, with 48 participants of various ages and skills trying the sport for the first time.

Children from as young as two rode on strider bikes, which have no pedals and are designed so youngsters can put their feet down easily, with some even taking on the whole track with determination.

The club recently received a grant from BHP Billiton to install a new start gate, which is of the same standard as those used in the Olympics and World BMX Championships. The club said they were ecstatic to have a gate of this quality in the Pilbara and it gives its members world-class facilities for both practice and racing. This not only benefits Hedland BMX, but also the Karratha, Tom Price and Newman clubs when they visit for the first round of the North West Super Series.

Hedland BMX invited BHP Billiton representative Chris Cottier to officially launch the new facility last week, with eight lucky riders being drawn from a raffle to be on the gate for the first race.

The season proper started last Friday.
