Drugs, weapons and cash seized in Pilbara

Police and Department of Corrective Services staff execute searches for contraband on cars coming into the Roebourne Regional Prison on Saturday.

Pilbara police officers have seized drugs, weapons and cash in a week-long operation targeting drug dealers and volume crime in the region.

Operation Catkin was carried out in the Town of Port Hedland and City of Karratha by volume crime teams, district detectives and the canine unit from Perth.

Roebourne police Sergeant Glen Beros said more than $100,000 of cash was recovered, as well as large quantities of cannabis, methamphetamine, steroids, firearms, ammunition and stolen property.

Mr Beros said seven search warrants and 17 vehicle stops were executed across the region, resulting in nine people being charged.

East Pilbara detectives officer-in-charge Sergeant Tony Langer said among other finds, Hedland officers seized a crossbow and a stolen motorbike.

Mr Langer said similar operations would likely be run sporadically throughout the year to keep people on the wrong side of the law on their toes.
