Police warn against vigilante Facebook posts

Hedland residents are being reminded by police not to take the law into their own hands after a recent spike in vigilante-related comments on Facebook community pages.

The latest warning comes six months after police condemned a local group for setting up their own street patrols in August in an attempt to stem crime. At the time, police said the group needed to stop before they themselves became the focus of police.

South Hedland Senior Sergeant Dean Snashall said he felt the frustrations of the community, but urged people to report crimes to the police.

"I'm aware of the Facebook posts. We're more interested in receiving the information to us, rather than people going on Facebook and raising their concerns," he said.

"I'm not aware of specific groups that may or may not be trying to form but … it's not good for anyone and could potentially cause more problems."
