Vinny rests after escape act

Vinny, the wandering wombat who went missing earlier this week, has returned safe and sound to the Goldfields Wildlife Rehabilitators.

While the errant marsupial was unable to speak to the Kalgoorlie Miner after his ordeal, his public relations manager, GWR wildlife co-ordinator Rowena Walker, said Vinny was having a well-deserved rest.

“As we speak he’s lying on his back, sound asleep on the floor enjoying the breeze,” she said.

“He came home and just drank and ate for an hour … and then he went straight to bed and has been sleeping ever since.”

Found 3km from the wildlife rehabilitation facility, Vinny was discovered in the yard of a couple living just outside Coolgardie.

Ms Walker said Vinny was incredibly lucky.

“The (chance) of him getting lost in bush was far greater than walking into a rural backyard … and he was getting very close to the highway as well,” she said.

“If he had missed their house by a couple of hundred yards he would have been straight on to the highway.”

Ms Walker thanked all those who had helped in the search for the missing marsupial, especially those who took time searching surrounding bushland.

Special thanks were reserved for the couple, who Ms Walker said declined the $500 reward offered for the wombat’s return.

From now on, Ms Walker said the GWR would be limiting Vinny’s excursions.
She also said GWR wanted to create a permanent night-time activity enclosure for the wombat.
