Helicopter firm back flying

The owner of a Kimberley helicopter company stripped of its air operator's certificate has welcomed a decision allowing him to continue flying and operate charter flights.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority last month also cancelled the appointment of Joseph Calandra as chief pilot of Broome Helicopter Services.

CASA initially identified non-compliance with a range of relevant safety requirements during an audit, including poor record keeping, failing to comply with pilot flight and duty limitations, not adequately training pilots, poor airworthiness control, aircraft operated with overdue maintenance and incorrect load control.

At a hearing on Friday, the Administrative Appeals Tribunal decided Mr Calandra could continue as chief pilot while operating charter flights until his appeal was decided.

Mr Calandra said BHS returned to normal on Friday.

"We have always been confident we would be successful and the good news reflects our 11 years operation and community support," Mr Calandra said.

"I would like to thank all the individuals and businesses who continue to support us."

Mr Calandra said he was not angered by the actions of CASA and understand its responsibilities in accordance with aviation safety.

"We will continue to work effectively with CASA to ensure our company complies with all safety regulations and requirements," he said.

"BHS have returned to business as usual with all tourist and corporate operations effective immediately."
