Clontarf Shield winner decided

Members of the Broome and Port Hedland grand final teams.

Port Hedland won this year's Kimberley Clontarf Shield, beating one of the Broome sides in the final of the 10-team tournament last week.

The Clontarf Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal men, with branches all over the State.

The Kimberley Clontarf Shield is held on an annual basis, with this year's teams from Broome, Kununurra, Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing, Derby, Port Hedland, Roebourne and Karratha. After a day of high-quality action, Port Hedland overcame a Broome side in the grand final at St Mary's Oval by five points.

West Kimberley Clontarf Academy director Phil Docherty said this year's event was well received.

"This was the biggest tournament we have had so far and it was a fantastic day," he said.

"It all ran smoothly and the boys' behaviour and performances on the pitch were fantastic.

"The idea is for the boys to socialise with each other and have fun - it is also a nice incentive to make sure they continue to come to school."
