Interest aplenty in Chinatown strategy
Public comment on the Broome Shire’s ambitious Draft Chinatown Development Strategy closes this Friday and among a high number of public submissions there will be at least one concerned party’s offering.
The short to mid-term plan to transform Chinatown into “the heart and soul of Broome” was released for public comment in August.
Since then, the Shire has reported great interest in the number of submissions received to date and crowds attending public information displays.
One organisation which has submitted a concern is Environs Kimberley.
The Broome environmental lobby group said it was extremely concerned about a potential new road mentioned in the plan, through the Roebuck Bay floodplain.
Spokesperson Martin Pritchard said it would be bad news for the environment.
“This would be a disaster for the floodplain in this area that’s so close to Dampier Creek,” he said.
“There would be hydrocarbons washing into the floodplain and very likely algal blooms from nutrients building up behind the banks of the causeway.”
Mr Pritchard said algal blooms were known for causing fish kills and there are already problems in the bay with Lyngbya which is highly toxic.
The proposed road is among links and extensions highlighted as solutions to reducing traffic congestion in Chinatown and to encourage more walking and cycling within the precinct.
Broome Shire president Graeme Campbell said the plan aimed to capture what Chinatown could become – not only the town’s commercial centre but an attractive destination for locals and tourists, all year round.
“[It] includes a concept plan with 30 different elements and we’re seeking the Broome community’s feedback to determine which, if not all, of these elements they would like to see put into action,” he said.
“Proposed developments include a foreshore boardwalk and viewing platforms, an interpretive nature walk through the mangroves, night markets, and rebuilding the old tramway to Town Beach.”
