Regatta delayed until festival time

After the sudden cancellation of the Dragon Boat Regatta last month, organisers have announced the event will be rescheduled for the first weekend of September.

Regular participants of the annual race were left disappointed after organisers postponed the July 21 regatta, citing “unfavourable” weather conditions.

Broome Rotary president Graeme Atherton said the decision was made when strong easterly winds were forecast for the scheduled weekend.

Last year the event was held on September 17, during the Shinju Matsuri Festival.

Mr Atherton said based on tidal conditions, the next favourable opportunity to conduct the regatta was Saturday, September 1.

Rotary met with the Shinju Matsuri organisers last week to discuss the best outcome to avoid clashes with the August 31 to September 9 festival’s activities.

Mr Atherton said the regatta would be held at Town Beach.
