Desperate Mob gets hand-up
A local real estate agent has made a generous personal donation to Hedland’s defunct Mingle Mob bus service in the hope it will inspire more locals to dig deep.
Crawford Realty’s Hayden Crawford made a $1000 donation to the Youth Involvement Council’s youth-at-risk bus service, which ceased to operate in February because of lack of funding.
Mr Crawford said he had wanted to give back to the community which had supported him over the years, so put a call out on Facebook to see which organisations had community support.
“The overwhelming thing that came back was Mingle Mob … it wasn’t just a couple of people, it was 25 or so people that came back in a day or two saying this is a great program, you have to support it,” he said.
“Being in the community, a lot of people don’t realise the number of programs YIC is doing and the extent of the staff and programs, and it was eye-opening to hear about all of their work.
“It’s important for people who are doing well and succeeding in the community to give a little bit back where they can.”
YIC manager Vicki-Tree Stephens said no one had made such a sizeable personal donation in her seven years with the organisation.
“It’s great to know there’s that support in the community for the program, because at the moment we’re pretty desperate to get the service going again for the safety of the young people out there at night,” she said.
