Eighth time is the charm

Albany's Aydan Trewern claimed his maiden WA Modified Sedan Title after eight attempts, four of which he finished on the podium, with a dominant display in the 35-lap final in Carnarvon this Saturday night.

Returning to the venue where he competed in his first WA Modified Sedan Title in 2006-07 and finished third, Trewern started from position four in the championship final and quickly chased down early leader Mick Hamon on his way to a brilliant win.

On lap 22, Trewern was able to get past Hamon, who would retire from the race shortly after, and from there the Albany Speedway Club member raced well clear to cross the line 10.607 seconds ahead of Jason Pearce in second while Matt Noakes was third.

Such was Trewern's domination in the final, he lapped every car that remained running in the race apart from those of Pearce and Noakes, and recorded the fastest lap of the entire weekend with a 17.888 second circulation which was 0.6 seconds outside the track record.

The result ended years of heartache for Trewern in the event after getting close and standing on the podium four times, while also crashing out in a prominent position in a couple of others.

Trewern was third in his first attempt in Carnarvon, ran second in Albany (2009-10) and in Broome (2010-11), and was third again in Albany in 2012-13.

"I finally got one so I was pretty stoked," Trewern said.

"I still had my work cut out to win and I know it's not easy to get one so I will take it where I can.

"Since I have built this car, I have (crashed out) two titles so my aim was just to finish.

"I knew it was quick enough but it was all about trying to finish."

The 25-year-old scored two wins, a second and one non-finish in his heat races to qualify fourth on the grid.

"I just want to thank my sponsors and all my crew," he said.

"I wasn't going to race this season because of work commitments, but I did two meetings and the car was going well so we thought we would do the title."

Fellow Albany drivers Blake Watson, competing in his first WA Modified Sedan Title, finished a creditable fifth place and Calon Ball was forced to retire after 21 laps.
