Stakes are high in sandwich battle

Boulder's Broken Hill Hotel is raring to have a crack at the title of WA's best country steak sandwich after suffering a crushing defeat to Matso's Broome Brewery last year.

The Australian Hotels Association announced yesterday its search had begun for this year's Best Steak Sandwich 2015.

On the bill representing "Golden Outback" venues are the Broken Hill Hotel, Lake King Tavern, Prime West Grill, Recreation Hotel, Esperance Travellers Inn, Kulin Hotel, Wavecrest Bar and Bistro, and Wickepin Hotel and Harvest Cafe.

Broken Hill Hotel owner Andrew Mackay said his wife's recipe, which featured a spicy beetroot salsa, two pieces of scotch fillet and salad, was bound to "knock 'em all over" this year.

"We've upgraded our beetroot salsa," Mr Mackay said.

"We've put some extra spices in there.

"It's good food, plenty of it, at a good price - which is the country way of doing things."

Despite being confident of the Broken Hill's sanger credentials, Mr Mackay did admit Laurie Ayres from the Recreation Hotel in Boulder presented a real threat.

"It just shows the quality of the food that's coming out of this area," he said. "May the best steak sandwich win."

After online consumer voting, five metropolitan finalists and five regional finalists (one from each tourism region) will be invited to compete in a live steak sandwich cook-off. Finalists will be announced on April 23 with the final cook-offs at the AHA's Hospitality Expo at Crown Perth on May 19 and May 20.
