Sound of brass band brings joy to residents

A brass band brought Christmas joy to aged care and disability services last Sunday.

The Goldfields Brass Band volunteered their afternoon to delight people staying at Amana Living, the children’s ward at the Kalgoorlie Hospital, Pira Avenue and Victoria House.

Normally a band of 25, 12 members went out armed with many instruments such as trombones, flutes, trumpets and horns.

Band president Mike Lee said everyone was singing along and it made for a very happy day.

“The staff at Pira and Victoria House had all their residents out, so we played to many people,” he said.

“We managed to surprise a few people with our presence as well.”

The band’s engagements are usually all for the community and Mr Lee said it was something they loved doing.

“Especially for those people who can’t always get out and about,” he said.

Goldfields Individual Family and Support Association chief executive Robert Hicks said the residents appreciated the band taking the trouble to come out and play.

For band conductor Keith Nichols, it was one of his last performances in the role, as he is stepping down after five years.

The band hopes someone will fill his shoes soon.
